Ricardo Rodrigues, triathlete
Background Rodrigues, 29, is a Brazilian who moved to San Diego five years ago because of the training conditions here. He played basketball and volleyball in high school and has been an avid runner since he was 11. Rodrigues ran his first marathon at 14, finishing in about 4 ½ hours. At last fall’s Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii, Rodrigues completed the 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and marathon run in 9 hours, 36 minutes, 47 seconds. He placed 112th out of 1,470 participants.
Improvement Rodrigues completed his first Ironman-distance race last May in Brazil. He improved at Hawaii by more than 45 minutes.
Thinking man Rodrigues said the book “Thinking Body: Dancing Mind” helped prepare him for Hawaii. “It gave me so much inspiration. It’s common sense for everything. It opened my mind.”
Supportive friends Rodrigues is a waiter at BJ’s Pizza & Grill in La Jolla. The restaurant raised $1,200 to help cover his Hawaii expenses.
